My list of outdoorsy adventures pales in comparison to some of my friends, but now that I look at my list of recommendations, I don’t think it’s too bad for a little country girl who only dreamed of such adventures. Having added another fun activity this past Saturday to my list of “things I’ve tried,” I started thinking about what other outdoorsy types of things I’d like to tackle…
Five fun adventures that I highly recommend you try:
1. SUP – Just last Saturday I tried stand up paddleboarding and had so much fun. In case you missed it, you can read about my adventures on the Beaverdam Creek Reservoir here.
2. Parasailing – Bill and I parasailed over the Outer Banks a couple of summers ago. Even though I’m somewhat afraid of heights, it was amazing and I didn’t expect it to be such a calm and relaxing experience. To join in on the fun, you can read my recap here.
5. Snorkeling – I snorkeled once in Hawaii, was very timid, and would like a do-over.
Bonus: Trail Running – I have a lot of friends who run, but don’t trail run. Trail running is an entirely different sport, and I encourage anyone who loves running and adventure to give it a try. The views, the animal sightings, and the thrill of the risks just can’t be beat!
Five fun adventures that I would love to try someday:
1. Ziplining
2. Hiking Into The Grand Canyon
3. Swimming With Dolphins
4. Hot Air Ballooning
5. Dare I say skydiving?
- Questions:
- Which items from my list have you tried?
- What fun adventures should I try that I didn’t mention?
- Are you racing this weekend? ~ I’m running the Firecracker 5K on Independence Day morning!

Today I’m joining the DC Trifecta’s Friday Five Linkup with Courtney at Eat Pray Run DC, Cynthia at You Signed Up for What?!, and Mar at Mar on the Run! I’d love to try standing up paddle boarding. I am definitely afraid of heights but my family convinced me to do zip lining and parasailing which I ended up loving.. My husband and I hiked a trail in the Grand Canyon which was incredible.and surprisingly challenging due to the heat and altitude change. But I would definitely do it again. We live a few miles from a skydiving.place and we literally see dozens of people jumping every summer day. We can hear people yelling, “Yahoo!” all the time so they must be having fun ;). Hot air ballooning is on the top of my bucket list!
My husband and I are going to run our new traditional DIY “4 on the 4th”. . We ran our local race for years and loved it but have evolved into this new plan the last few years where we run our own 4 miles to start the 4th of July celebration. Happy 4th!
We took little short hikes around the Grand Canyon, but nothing too long. I’d love to go back and do it again. When I parasailed, I just felt like I was looking out of the window of a plane, not hanging in the air. Now you make me want to try ziplining sooner than later!
I’ve actually swam with the dolphins. It wasn’t on my bucket list back then but I’m glad I did it. The only outdoor thing I’ve had on my very small bucket list was to take a horse and carriage ride through central park but now since that is no longer allowed, I guess I won’t be doing it!
Taking a carriage ride through Central Park would have been fun! I’ve been to NYC three times, but never in Central Park.
Grand Tetons is on my list! There is a half there I want to do! Love SUP and Kayaking. I’m afraid of heights – i don’t know that I could parasail!!

I’m sure a race in Jackson would be beautiful! Is it a road or trail race? Either would be fun!
You must try ziplining, it is SO fun! My son has tried sky diving and loved it! Scuba diving was really exciting for me as well, maybe something you might like to try.
I’m running a 10 k tomorrow for our July 1st Canada day. Have fun at the Firecracker!
My sons went skydiving as part of my older son’s bachelor party. They loved it, too!
I hope your 10K went well, and that you had lots of fun!
You are quite adventurous ! I prefer keeping my feet on the ground and staying close to the shore. I don’t like heights…
Biking or running on trails would suit me fine, kyacking I like, but I am not a fan of things like white water rafting or skiing. Anytime speed or risk is involved, I get very nervous.

I haven’t water skied in years, but loved it back when I had the opportunity to go. I would never go white water rafting. Just the thought of it freaks me out.
Those are some of my favorite outdoor adventures up until you mentioned skydiving! LOL! We have an indoor place in Orlando where you can try skydiving. It was close enough to the real thing for me!
A skydiving simulator place just opened up near us. I should definitely go try that sometime.
Great list! I really want to try SUP! And indoor rock climbing.

I haven’t tried indoor rock climbing. I don’t think I’d seek it out, but would try it if the opportunity presented itself.
Hiking in the Grand Canyon would be on my list. But not skydiving or parasailing. I like my feet firmly on the ground!

I thought I’d be a nervous wreck parasailing, but wasn’t at all. It was so peaceful and serene up there.
Skydiving!!! You should do it! I did and it was so much fun!

Our sons went skydiving as part of my older son’s bachelor party. They loved it!
We went to a great zip line outdoor adventure course in Rockville called GoApe lots of fun!

I think you recapped that, right? I remember reading someone’s recap about ziplining this spring.
You are a daredevil! Many of yours I am too chicken to try- like parasailing, hot air ballooning, zip lining… I have done a lot of trail running and one thing that is on my bucket list as well is hiking the GC!
Just to be fair, I haven’t gone ziplining or hot air ballooning yet! 😀
My husband and I did a lot of traveling across America, camping along the way, when we were first married. I’d love to redo those trips spending longer at each location. We would definitely spend a lot more time at the Grand Canyon if we did it again.
I love outdoor adventures! I’ve done a lot of these. But I would love to visit the Grand Tetons, swim dolphins and go hot air ballooning too. More hiking of national parks and forests is definitely on my list. And cold water scuba diving (like in Iceland).
Cold water scuba diving sounds pretty cool, but I don’t think I’m a candidate for any sort of scuba diving. I’m afraid I might freak out knowing I’m so far below the water’s surface.
I would love to swim with dolphins! How fun would that be. I like snorkeling a lot as well!

For me, it would probably be more like hanging onto the dolphins for dear life without panicking! 😉
I’ve done a little bit of hiking, a very little bit of trail running (this winter, no less, which was mild), and I’ve been up in a hot air balloon (and glider).
Don’t wanna zipline, parasail, or skydive, but would like to try kayaking and SUP. Hoping to make that happen at some point this summer!

I suspect riding in a hot air balloon and parasailing would be very similar in how it feels to gently and peacefully float in the air. I bet the hot air balloon might give you more of a sense of security because you’re not as exposed and have a place to stand/sit. I definitely would like to try it to see how they compare.
All of those sound fun. I’ve gone ziplining and loved it, but you won’t catch me skydiving. No thank you.
Yeah, I think skydiving is one of those things I “want to do,” but won’t go out of my way to make it happen!
