Let the Holidays Officially Begin
Daniel and Pablo arrived at our house on Thursday mid-day for the drive to my mom’s house for an early Christmas. We had the first of Pablo’s Christmas gifts, a new bed, unwrapped and waiting, and he seemed to approve!
The front of a two-day rain storm moved in just as we hit the road so it was a slow haul to the other side of the commonwealth, and it took us about an hour and a half longer than usual. Rain continued at my mom’s house the following day causing flooding, but nothing more serious than branches overflowing their banks.
Our other son and our daughter-in-law arrived on Friday after fighting the rain on their drive. It wasn’t great traveling weather so we were thankful when everyone arrived safely.
Running
I was released to resume my normal exercising on Wednesday, so on Thursday morning I headed out for my first run in just over two weeks. My right knee started hurting within the first mile so I swung back by the house on one of my laps and changed shoes and that took care of the problem. Obviously, I suspected that my old shoes might be the culprit.
On Saturday morning at my mom’s house, I woke up to snow covering our cars and the grass in her yard. As I ran along the North Fork of the Holston River I was surprised that the water was almost flowing in the road (after all that rain, I’m not sure why I was surprised). After my turnaround, my glute/hammie reared its ugly head so I limped/ran the rest of the way home – I’m pretty sure the pain is actually caused by a bulging disc in my back that’s been an on-again off-again issue for several years.
By the time I got home, the sun was popping in and out of the clouds and most of the snow had melted. Pablo was out playing in the back yard and having the time of his life, but I couldn’t get him to run along side of me very well – he was more into running in circles and zigzags. My GoPro (affiliate link) was perfect for capturing his zoomies!
Eventually, he found a stick and settled down to chew on it. Life is good when you’re a pup visiting the farm!
Biking
I got back on the bike the first day I was allowed to resume exercise and I’m going to try to be more consistent with biking this winter. I suspect my body will thank me for doing more cardio that doesn’t create pounding on my spine.
Strength Training
On Wednesday, I added legs back into my strength training workout and in addition to leg extensions, curls, single-legged squats, I did two sets of lunges for the first time in two weeks. Oh my goodness, my glutes were screaming at me all day Thursday and Friday. 😉
Yoga
Bringing yoga back into the mix didn’t seem to bother either of my issues.
Heading Home
As I type, we’re heading back home and Pablo is eagerly anticipating opening the rest of his gifts on Christmas morning.
In case you skipped checking in on my blog this past week, here’s what you missed…

Looking ahead to this coming week…

In addition to the runs I mentioned above, here’s a complete run-down of my workouts from this past week (completed mostly in our home gym)…

- Do you travel during the holidays?
- How did you spend your weekend?
- Did you race this weekend?
And that’s a wrap… Have a great week!

Definitely no racing this weekend, in fact no running this weekend at all!
I’m sorry to hear that the aches & pains haven’t subsided. 🙁
Pablo looks extremely pleased with his stick and his bed — who knows which is really his favorite? 😉
Good point! Pablo might like his stick the best!
Glad to hear that you are cleared to run again! I plan to do more biking this year as well. Pablo sure has become the star of your family!! What will happen when the grand kids arrive one day??
Thanks, Deborah, if only it felt good to run again…
Puppy zoomies are the best.
Glad your drives were OK in the weather and the flooding wasn’t too damaging. I hope you’re able to find some relief from the bulging disc
Just local-ish travel for me, mom lives in the suburbs about 20m north of NYC

Puppy zoomies crack me up! So much energy…
That’s great news that you were cleared to run this week! I’m currently battling some hip bursitis so I’m going to be focusing on more cross training in early 2019.
Pablo is so cute!! It looks like he had a great time.
Thanks, Kim. I hope your hip feels better quickly.
Glad to hear you’re back in action! It’s crazy how much rain has been falling our east…nothing in my part of the country. There is snow in the forecast for Christmas Eve overnight….
We’ve had our share of the rain and we’re supposed to get more tonight and tomorrow, and New Year’s Eve and New Year’s Day…
Glad to hear you are cleared to run! Pablo’s zoomies are so cute.
That flooding is crazy- so glad everyone was able to travel safely.
Thanks, Jessie!
Sorry to hear that your hammies and glutes are still ouch-y, but it is good that you were cleared to run. I took 2 weeks off too, and my mood went downhill quickly! Have a Merry Christmas with your family. I enjoyed seeing the pictures of Pablo!
