As I alluded to on Sunday, Wednesday was a big day for me. Way back in November I had been asked if I was interested in teaching a one-time class for George Mason University’s Osher Lifelong Learning Institute (OLLI). I jumped at the chance even though it had been a very long time since I’d been at the front of a classroom.
There were two themes in the Aging Well category that fit perfectly with what I wanted to discuss so I suggested that I combine the two into one presentation. The two categories were 1) physical fitness – general guidelines for exercise to maintain cardio and muscle fitness and 2) balance.
After much thought and consideration, I named my class “Staying Fit Through The Ages” and wrote up my class description for the spring term catalog. At that point I had a general plan and felt much more confident. Once the holidays were behind me, I starting thinking about how I wanted to present my material.
Initially I was leery of doing a Power Point presentation because I’d never done anything like that before (remember my stick figures from this presentation?). I had used Power Point to make a few flyers, gift certificates, etc., but never a full on presentation. Eventually I decided to try my hand with PP, knowing that Bill would help me if I got in a pinch. The finished product turned out great and had twenty-five slides.
I was pleasantly surprised at what a nice room I had when I arrived to give my presentation. With twenty-seven people registered for my class, I could tell that they wouldn’t be cramped as I had feared. My hope was that they would be able to get up and practice some of the exercises and stretches as we discussed them.
I started by telling my students that Bill and I used to hike on the Appalachian Trail when we were in college, and then explained that this picture was taken two years ago when we ran up to McAfee Knob. My point was that we were much more fit in our fifties than our twenties.
Most of the hands in the room were raised when I asked who currently exercises regularly, and I could tell that the majority of students were interested in learning what they were doing right or wrong with their current exercise programs. They were there to learn how to enhance their training to get the most out of it.
After going over what to do prior to starting an exercise program and the few items of caution to consider, and I covered the benefits of exercise for older adults focusing on the following areas:
1. Strength Training to Improve Muscular Strength
2. Aerobic Exercises to Improve Cardiovascular Endurance
3. Simple Movement to Improve Balance
4. Stretching to Improve Flexibility
5. Hydration Tips
I’m so glad I had the opportunity to teach this class. My students were engaged, asked lots of questions, and lingered afterward with a few more questions. I hope I’ll have the opportunity to do it again some day!

I use Google Slides all.the.time for work, but I still can’t make things anywhere as cool as my 14 year old can do with the same software LOL.
Congrats on a good class. Sounds like it went well. I have to frequently remind myself that my fitness goals need to be long term focused as I want to be running for years yet.

what an awesome class to teach!! Kudos to you! I use Powerpoint quite a bit – I LOVE it! In my old job I was practically the point person for making PP presentations and animations. Sounds like everything went well! Nice room set up too.

I “think” I did a pretty good job of adding a decent amount of commentary to the slides, and of course for many of them I had the luxury of demonstrating recommended exercises as I guided the students through each one.
I have never done anything like this but actually attended an Osher retirement seminar at UNC Asheville a few years ago. This sounds like a wonderful class and kudos for helping some of us old folks. Being active is part of my daily like, but alot of my friends could use help.

i didn’t know that you taught! How fun! I so cannot make any of those types of slides to save my life. The kids know how how to do everything now though.

I taught physical education, health, and driver’s education for two years prior to getting married. 🙂
Our children grew up with computers and know how to do everything. Occasionally when I can teach my sons or hubby a trick I’ve learned on the computer (usually because of something I’ve learned from experimenting with my blog) that they don’t know, I feel like a genius!
I would love to teach a class like this! Heck, I can’t even get my young patients interested in exercise! But it seems like us “older” folks are looking at living our later years with some quality, so maybe that has something to do with it?

Sounds like an awesome class. I don’t use powerpoint anymore, but I used to back 10 years ago for presentations with my restaurant staff. Never truly got the hang of it.

I think you came up with a great title for your presentation – that’s an important part! It sounds like a great class and you are the perfect person to teach it. Do you think it’s something you’ll do each year?
Luckily, my job does not involve many PowerPoint presentations. I absolutely hate public speaking, even when it’s in a room of my own peers/coworkers. It is something I have worked to get better at, but I don’t feel like I have improved much. When I get up to speak my pulse races, all I can hear is a rushing in my ears, and I become very conscious of all eyes on me. For the past two years I have served as president for the Virginia conference of a professional organization that I’m a member of. It has involved a lot of public speaking at various meetings and trainings and I am so happy to be handing that role to someone else at the end of April!
