Today marked an end of a very special era – an era that started with my original BRF back in 1997…
In 1997 I trained for my very first marathon and ultra alone, and occasionally while out on my training runs I’d pass three runners who I knew from my neighborhood. Had I asked to join them, they would have welcomed me with open arms; and had they invited me on a run, I would have jumped at the chance. In reality though, they thought I preferred running alone and I assumed their circle of three was complete.
While waiting for our local 1998 turkey trot to start, I struck up a conversation with these ladies and the rest is history. With a tender IT band resulting from a flare-up during my JFK 50-Miler, I had to wait about a month while babying it before I could resume running. I joined my new running friends, plus another runner who joined the group at about the same time, for my first official group run in early January 1998.
I remember being nervous before that first run – worried that I wouldn’t be able to keep up or that I wouldn’t have anything in common with this group of friends. I quickly learned that we all ran at about the same pace and with our children’s similar ages, we had plenty of material to keep us chatting for hours.
For years we met at 6 AM most weekday mornings for a five-mile run. After several years, one of our band of five runners moved away, another chose to focus on tennis over running, and eventually another runner moved. Our group of five was down to two – the lone holdouts, Susan and Deb.
Eighteen years later, Susan and I have run countless miles together both during training and at races; and we’ve even added another very special friend, Shawn, to our little fold. These two are the ladies who I refer to as my BRF’s. They are friends who I’ve run with the longest, know me the best, and love me despite my many flaws.
The three of us ran together three mornings a week for years, juggling our schedules as necessary. Eventually, work got in the way of our early morning runs and we each had to do our own thing, but we continued with our Sunday morning runs. If one of us needed to take a few weeks off to let an injury recover, we’d all walk instead of running; and then at some point a couple of years ago, our Sunday morning runs consistently became Sunday morning walks.
Once winter hit, we disbanded until spring because walking in the cold was much rougher than running in it. This spring we were a little slow starting back with our walks and before we knew it we’d come to the day we dreaded; today was our final Sunday morning walk for our little threesome. Next Sunday, it will just be Shawn and me meeting because Susan will be moving away this coming Friday.
I will miss Susan terribly, but hope to see her from time to time; and she knows that there’s an open invitation to stay at our house for her and her husband whenever she’s in town.
Yes, running brought this fabulous friend to me; and through running, Susan and I forged a deep and lasting friendship. She is the kindest person I have ever met, and has taught me so much about how to be a friend. We’ve been there for each other during the loss of parents, the marriages of children, and just last week I got to hold her first grandchild in my arms.
Be safe in your next adventure, my friend, and remember me whenever you see Little Debbie Fudge Rounds at the grocery store (because we both know that neither one of us would ever be tempted to buy a box and eat a bite of their chocolatey fudgy deliciousness)! 😉
Speaking of running and eating chocolatey fudgy deliciousness, here’s how my workouts and nutrition went down this past week…
Fitness tools beyond the equipment in my gym that I used during the week included:
- Rodney Yee’s Complete Yoga For Beginners (affiliate link)

- Questions:
- Who’s has been your friend for the longest?
- How often do you run with friends?

Have a great week!

I’m linking up with Holly at HoHo Runs and Tricia from MissSippiPiddlin for their Weekly Wrap. Be sure to check out not only the hosts, but the other great bloggers joining in on the fun!
Aww, what a beautiful story Deb! I mostly run alone so I don’t have a BRF. However, my BF (who is not a runner), will be doing her first 5K with me in November. She has been hearing me talk about running for years so she finally decided it was time for her to join me!
Perhaps your BF will one day become your BRF! 🙂
Oh, what a beautiful tribute! I have done so much training on my own, I’d probably be able to find a way back to it…but it’s been great having my friend, Barb, the past few years to run (and car pool to races) with. The long runs really go much faster when you’re in conversation (with someone other than yourself).

Thanks, Kim! You are so right, the miles fly by when running with a friend.
RBFs are the best! What a nice way to have made such a strong and lasting connection and hopefully in the future you can meet up for a ladies weekend and race reunion. I love your chart! Looks like you had a great week of training, yoga and strength. Great job!

Shawn and I are already planning a road trip to see Susan!
Thanks for the compliment on the infographic. It’s been fun making it and updating it each week.
What a lovely story. I know you will miss Susan! I’ve had two really great BRFs at different times that are both not running now. I miss them. We went on countless road trips for races. My first BRF and I were such a fixture we were seen as a duo. “Where’s Holly & Kim?” I do still see her for coffee regularly, which is nice. At this point, I train solo. Thanks for linking, Deb.
It’s great that you still get to see your BRF, even if not for runs.
That is so great to have that friendship and support all those years. I am sorry Susan is moving away, I know that will be a big change for you.
I only had one run buddy around here, and we would just occasionally meet to run. She has a new buddy now and they joined a training team, so I really am training solo now. I just got too slow trying to come back from all my foot issues, still considering mall walking lol

Karen, I’m so sorry to hear that you’re having to run by yourself. Have you tried looking to see if your community has an MRTT chapter? We have runners of all distances and paces in ours. Good luck!
What a great story!!! Love it!

Thank you! 🙂
It’s always really sad when a friend moves away, but at least these days it’s easier to stay in touch! Probably my HS buddies have been my friends the longest.
I run alone a lot, but I run with friends sometimes too — it tends to go in spurts.

I’ve been preparing for this one for a while, but it doesn’t make it any easier. And you’re right, these days it’s so much easier to stay in touch!
So sorry to hear about your long term BRF moving away. That’s going to be hard. You’ll just have to plan some destination races!
My oldest friend/dearest friend is that crazy kooky one I go kayaking with. We’ve been friends since high school. Love her!

Oh how fun! You always look like you’re having such a great time when you’re out on the water.
My next door neighbor and good friend moved to CA last year – she was my walking partner too. My heart goes out to you, Deb. I hope you find some new friends to partner with!
I love your weekly run down graphic – I may have to adopt something similar to help me stick to my goals.
Thanks, Dana! And yes, sharing my workout filled infographic with the world keeps me quite accountable.
Yes! I totally get the BRF situation. I had never been a runner until a neighborhood friend convinced myself and another new girl in our neighborhood to do the Richmond Half with her. I didn’t think I could or would ever do anything like that, especially since I had a 4 month old when we started training and she was 8 months old when the race came! But I grew to love and depend on our weekly runs together, both for our physical workout and our mental/spiritual connection. Our group has now grown to about 4-6 at any given point. We still do a Saturday morning group run and I love that time we have together to share our wins and struggles of the week. Before last year I would have thought having a BRF was insane but I TOTALLY get it and would be so sad to not have my girl squad!
Aren’t running friends the best, and aren’t you glad that you totally get it? Congrats on joining our fantastic sport and good luck at your next race! I ran the Richmond Marathon a few years ago and can only imagine that the half would be equally as fabulous. 🙂
I have a feeling that she will be back for a few more walks since it was such a great experience for the two of you! A very sweet story to tell despite it’s end. It’s nice to read stories about perseverance through everyday life.
Thanks for posting your preferred yoga videos. Rodney Yee is a great instructor.

Don’t you just love Rodney Yee’s yoga videos? I had his VHS tapes and had to replace them with DVD’s (that’s how long I’ve enjoyed his yoga routines). 🙂
<3 <3 <3
I am sure you are going to miss the heck out of her.
I run with friends a couple times a week. It took a long time for me to get comfortable with it, but now I enjoy it.
No races this past weekend, but I have a 5K coming up on Saturday.

You are right about that! I’m definitely looking forward to a girls’ weekend/reunion sometime this fall!
