Welcome to Race Linkup, a monthly linkup opening on the last Monday of every month and staying open for four weeks. Link your race schedule so everyone can see who else will be at the next race and we can arrange meet-ups with other bloggers and our readers. You can link up your race schedule every month or only when you register for an additional race – you choose how often you want to get your schedule out there for other runners to see. I’d love to have you link up, and if you do, please remember to follow my six simple rules.
I’m just now starting to feel pretty good after being partially sidelined for about a month with what seems to be an annual reoccurring injury. Having lost a lot of speed during the four weeks of my injury/recovery, I’m not rushing to register for any races this month.
I’m still hoping to register for a race in Chicago sometime in May before my son and daughter-in-law move back east from the Windy City. Wendy from Taking the Long Way Home was kind enough to suggest several spring races for me to consider, but my first choice was already sold out by the time I found out about it. Seriously, who wouldn’t want to run in the Race To Wrigley 5K and celebrate the World Champion Cubies? Hopefully, if I’m going to do it, by next month’s Race Linkup I’ll have a race pinned down.
I haven’t registered for any other 2017 races and in usual fashion (at least for the last few years), I’ll wait until closer to the races to sign up. I don’t want to register and then be a DNS, and more importantly, I don’t want to waste my money on a race I can’t run. At least one of the races I have my eye on fills up quickly, and I’ll have no choice but to register early during their opening registration hours.
Assuming I’m back in racing form by the summer, you’ll most likely find me running in these two races:
July 4 – Firecracker 5K – Reston Town Center, Reston, VA
August 20 – Leesburg 20K – Market Station, Leesburg, VA
Assuming I can get into the race during the short and busy registration period, you’ll find me running:
October 8 – Army Ten Miler – Pentagon, Arlington, VA
November 5 – Across The Bay 10K – Stevensville, MD *
I had hoped to invite some of my running friends down to the beach house to celebrate my 60th birthday and run one of the OBX fall races, something I’ve wanted to do for years, but now that seems to be up in the air. I still might do it by myself, though.
November 11 or 12 – OBX 5K or Half Marathon – Outer Banks, NC *
It wouldn’t be Thanksgiving without my family running in the:
November 23 – Thanksgiving Day 5K – Crossroads United Methodist Church, Ashburn, VA
And it would be Christmas without running in at least one Christmas themed race, and this year once again I’m considering:
December 10 – NOVA Jingle Bell 5K – Clyde’s at Willow Creek, Broadlands, VA (date and location not confirmed)
* On the fence about running
- Questions:
- Do you travel for races often?
- Do you sign up for races months in advance or at the last minute?
- Which race on your 2017 race schedule are you most excited about?
Hope to see you at a race!
I might have to take on the across the bay 10K one of these years. I am terrified of that bridge!

Me too, so I need to conquer that bridge! It’s been gorgeous on race day the last three years, so I predict that the year I sign up for it, there will be wind and horizontal rain.
I race often – almost every weekend. I don’t travel much – due to finances and a job.
I am excited about the Shape Half in NYC on April 30 and the Wine Glass Half in Oct.

I’ve heard nice things about the Wine Glass Half! Have fun at both!
I have my eye on a possible half next month. Right now I’m feeling a bit eh after getting home, so I’m going to wait and so how that plays out first since there isn’t a whole lot of time to train and I’d hate to be sick a couple of weeks and then unable to do it.
It’s a small race though. We’ll see.

Oh, cool! I hope you feel better quickly because you’re already trained for a half and it would be so easy to jump in. Will you be able to cross off a new state or is it a local race?
I’ve ran the Leesburg 20k before. It was HOT! Good luck! http://adventuresbykatie.com/leesburg-20k/
P.S. I added a link back.
It’s always a risk being brutally hot when running the Leesburg 20K. I’ve run it four times and got pretty lucky weather-wise two of the times.
Thanks for adding the link to your blog post. I appreciate it!
I like to sign up for the big races early- keeps me motivated and then fill in with some fun local ones as I go! I am glad you are feeling better!

Thanks, Mary Beth! Your strategy for signing up for races sounds like a really good one.
