Welcome to Race Linkup, a monthly linkup opening on the last Monday of every month and staying open for four weeks. Link your race schedule so everyone can see who else will be at the next race and we can arrange meet-ups with other bloggers and our readers. You can link up your race schedule every month or only when you register for an additional race – you choose how often you want to get your schedule out there for other runners to see. I’d love to have you link up, and if you do, please remember to follow my six simple rules.
I did it! I successfully signed up for my first race where I knew it could possibly sell out in a day or less. Back in the old days, I could wait until late summer to see how my training was going before committing to signing up for the Marine Corps Marathon, today’s it’s a lottery. Back in the old days I could have waited until a few weeks before the Army Ten-Miler to register, today it fills up in a day or two…
Having never run the Army Ten-Miler, I decided that this is the year to commit. After carefully checking the Virginia Tech football schedule and seeing that we had an away game that weekend, I had no excuse not to make this my year to add the Army Ten-Miler medal to my collection. I seriously have no idea if finishers receive a medal, but I like the way that sounds. 😉
I was a nervous wreck as I sat down in front of my laptop to register for the race on Wednesday morning (not really, but again, I like the way it sounds). I had texted my son’s girlfriend Jess at 7 AM to wish her luck with her entry and by 7:20 she let me know that she was in! After a couple of minor errors on my part, I got this notification. Oh crap!
I had to reenter all of my information and as soon as I hit submit, I quickly received a message that I my registration was complete. Yipee!
As for the rest of my racing season, here’s what I’m thinking, assuming that I’m healthy and injury free…
July 4 – Firecracker 5K – Reston Town Center, Reston, VA
August 20 – Leesburg 20K – Market Station, Leesburg, VA
October 8 – Army Ten-Miler – Pentagon, Arlington, VA
November 11 and 12 – OBX Half Marathon – Outer Banks, NC
November 23 – Thanksgiving Day 5K – Crossroads United Methodist Church, Ashburn, VA
December 10 – NOVA Jingle Bell 5K – Clyde’s at Willow Creek, Broadlands, VA (date and location not confirmed)
- Questions:
- Have you ever tried to get into a race, but it filled up before you could get registered?
- Have you run a race that had a lottery to get in?
- Which race on your 2017 race schedule are you most excited about?
Hope to see you at a race!
Congrats on signing up for the Army 10 Miler. I have a few friends that have run that race and they really enjoyed it!

I’m really looking forward to it, and can’t believe I’ve never run it in all these years of racing. 🙂
I am glad you were able to get in the race. So weird how before races did not fill up so quickly. I remember back in 2006 when I signed up for my first Chicago Marathon I did it during Memorial Day weekend.
I am not racing this year as much as I used to. I am sticking to the ones I like and have done in past years.

I, too, love running repeat races that I love! I signed up for the Marine Corps Marathon in mid-summer the first year I ran it. 😀
The only upcoming race I’m signed up for right now is the Kiawah Half in December. I plan to do a few others but mostly just local stuff that I jump into. I’ve never run a race with a lottery or that sells out because I typically don’t sign up for anything until right before. I only signed up for Kiawah so early because it was $40 so I figured even if I couldn’t run it, the tshirt and swag would be worth it haha. I bet the OBX race will be a lot of fun and I have heard so many good things about that area.
The Kiawah Half sounds fun. My friend vacations there every Thanksgiving, but I’ve never been there.
I’ll be at the Army Ten Miler. I love ten mile races – this will be a fun one a couple weeks after Berlin!
Cool, hopefully we’ll see each other at the race! 😀
I’ll have to check out the Jingle Bell race. I love anything that is Christmas themed!

They still haven’t posted the date for this year’s Jingle Bell Jog, and I hope they’re not going to not run it this years. Check out my race recap just to see the picture Bill took of all the runners running in their Santa suits that we got instead of a race shirt. It’s the coolest thing ever! 😀
You have some fun stuff on the schedule 🙂 I am afraid of running anything in August, you are brave!
I have been shut out more than once when an event is full and I didn’t jump in soon enough. I’d probably be at 20 halfs if I didn’t overthink things so much.
I do tend to wait until the last minute (if I can) to register for a race. I feel like I never know when a injury might rear its ugly head…
It amazes me how fast some of these races fill up! I added the Space Coast to my line up this year and the half is already full so they added a marathon relay! I am in for that- I like the way that sounds…….marathon relay! Thanks for the link up!

Isn’t it crazy how popular some races are? A marathon relay for Space Coast sounds fun!
