From Bleh to Let’s Do This
I don’t know why, but I started out the week in a funky, bleh mood. Fortunately, by Tuesday I had given myself an attitude adjustment and the rest of the week was better. As much as I love snow, I’m the type of person who needs to be outside and when treacherous roads and trails keep me from my early morning cardio workouts, it affects my mood and my day.
Overview of the Week
Before discussing each day’s workouts, here’s an overview of my workouts from this past week. Scroll down for daily details…
Sunday
I often either take a walk outside or hop on the treadmill for an easy walk while talking on the phone with my mom on Sunday afternoons. We talk several times a week, but on Sundays we usually talk longer and I just can’t sit and talk. This week, though, I poured a glass of wine and cozied up watching the snow gently falling outside as we chatted. There were no workouts on the day, not even shoveling snow.
Monday
I lifted weights during an open hole in my morning schedule and at 3:30 PM finally took it outside into the 34° (feels like 33°) for a 5K walk around our neighborhood. For the most part, I walked in about a half-inch of fresh snow on top of the previous day’s shoveled sidewalks and ended with a 15:32 average pace. My Saucony Perogrine 8 trail shoes (affiliate link) gave me plenty of traction and I didn’t need to wear my Yaktrax (affiliate link).
Tuesday
With no clients scheduled, I spent the entire morning doing end-of-year tax stuff for my business and then it took me until 3 PM to make it to the basement to get on my spin bike (affiliate link) for my workout. I just couldn’t get myself going after lunch. I’m such a rise and workout kind of gal that if I don’t get it done first thing in the morning, I often procrastinate. Of course, once I got going I enjoyed my ride and the time flew by while watching TV. I ended up riding 35 miles at a 17.4 MPH average speed which was just the attitude adjustment I needed!
Wednesday
I added cardio intervals to my hour-long strength training session by power walking around my basement between supersets. I think I’ll make running the stairs my intervals during one of my workouts next week.
Just after noon, Bill and I enjoyed a 5K walk on the neighborhood trails. It was 39° (feels like 33°) and the trails were a combination of patches of ice, packed snow, and completely clear. Even though it was slippery at places, traction wasn’t too bad since I was wearing my trail shoes; however, to stay safe I slowed my pace to a 17:18 average.
Thursday
I started my morning early with a virtual client, but once I finished our session I hopped on my treadmill (affiliate link) for a 1-mile walking warm-up, a 1-mile run, and a 1/2-mile cool-down.
I am always fascinated at the difference between my Garmin (affiliate link) mileage and what the treadmill shows. My previous Garmin almost always lagged behind the distance on my treadmill making me appear slower, but my new one gains distance, making my speed a tad faster. I like my new Garmin better! 😉
1-mile warm-up walk time:
- • Treadmill = 14:28
- • Garmin = 13:52
1-mile run time:
- • Treadmill = 10.00
- • Garmin = 9:43
1/2-mile cool-down walk time:
- • Treadmill = 7:31
- • Garmin = 7:14
After wrapping up my cardio workout I stretched for ten minutes, focusing solely on my legs.
Friday
Boy, did I screw up twice on Friday! Up early, I virtually trained three clients (two together) and then did my own hour-long strength training workout. Just as I wrapped up my final exercise, my doorbell rang. I ran upstairs and was surprised to see my cleaning crew standing at the door (I’d miscounted weeks and wasn’t expecting them until next Friday). A half hour later I get a text from a client saying, “Hello???” and immediately knew I’d messed up her schedule as well. I see her every other Friday and had somehow gotten her Fridays reversed on my phone. Fortunately, I was able to immediately jump on FaceTime and start her session only eight minutes late. 😬
I did remember to log onto Facebook Live at the correct time to teach my balance and stretching class, and as with most Fridays, I got in 15 minutes of total body stretching during the stretching segment.
Saturday
Our standing 9:30 AM Saturday morning bloggers Zoom ride may have been short on participants, but it certainly wasn’t short on conversation! Kim and I had a great time chatting and the minutes and miles flew by and before I knew it I’d gone 22 miles at an average speed of 16.5 MPH. I’m so grateful for indoor options when it’s too cold and slippery to ride outside.
Here’s What You Might Have Missed
In case you skipped checking in on my blog this past week, here’s what you missed…
- • Sunday – Weekly RunDown: January 24 – 30 / At-Home Workouts
- • Tuesday – It’s February: Are You Taking Care of Your Heart?
- • Friday – Catching Up Over Coffee: Fake Hot Chocolate, Virtual Margaritas, and a Happy Wrist
Questions:
- • Do you use Yaktrax or similar items when running in the snow/ice?
- • Do you find discrepancies between your treadmill speed and that of your Garmin?
- • Did you run in a race this weekend? If so, was it live or virtual?
And that’s my rundown… Have a great week!

My Garmin is a a little bit head of my treadmill when I run slower than 10 min/miles. Once I’m around the 9-10 min range it’s pretty close. and If I run close to 8 min miles, my Garmin is slower. I think it has to do with how I swing my arms!
I think you’re right about arm swinging having an effect on the pace. Need to swing my arms more… LOL
I run on saturdays but if you ever change to Sundays I can join you on the bike or if it rains on Sat.
I need to use my bike before work but I habitually procrastinate over coffee.
I do not run on snow or ice. I just wear my trail shoes and run in the road. Or not run at all. I do wear my Yak Trax on icy or snowy trails and they work great.
Right now it snowing so I am being lazy. I hope to get out there soon.
Darlene S Cardillo recently posted…Weekly Run Down for 2.1.21-.2.7.21: Hello February!
We had snowflakes much larger than quarters falling much of the morning, but now the sun is out and everything is melting.
I do virtual church and then blog stuff on Sunday mornings. Today, though, I rode my bike while watching mass.
I like running in the snow as long as I know there’s no frozen stuff from a previous storm hiding underneath the fresh blanket.
I was loving my yaktrax until they broke the other day! Looks like another week of roller coaster weather around here. Hope to make it outside for a few runs. I am not as excited to run on the treadmill and kind of avoid it at all costs
We’ve had to replace our Yaktrax a time or two over the many years we’ve been using them. Running on pavement when there’s a partial snow coverage is really hard on them. I learned that the hard way!
Our snow from this morning is melting rapidly!
Sometimes I wake up in a blah mood for no reason, but often I find that I feel better after my workout. Must be something about the endorphins!
Totally understand how you feel about afternoon workouts. I will do them every now and then but I really prefer morning workouts. There’s just something about getting the workout done and over with first thing in the morning!
Yes, a good workout pretty much always makes me feel better!
I’ve shared on my blog that I’m struggling a bit too-very blah, even sad at times. Even though it’s really cold here, the sun has been out and that helps my mood immensely. I’m hoping to get on the trails this week. We’ll see.
The sun always helps!
Sometimes my Garmin is almost right on with my treadmill, sometimes VERY far off. My coach just has me manually lap each mile or set with a workout so she knows what the treadmill says. I’m ready for outdoor SAFE warm weather running please 🙂
Agreed, there’s so much variance that I go with my treadmill’s pace when logging my walks/runs.
I am endlessly fascinated by Garmin vs treadmill difference. I’ve found that my Garmin tends to read pretty close to the speed of my last outdoor run no matter what speed I run on the treadmill and even if I keep my speed constant, the Garmin will read slower with each subsequent mile even if I speed up. I’m not saying my treadmill is right but I am saying that the Garmin is wrong so I always go by treadmill distance.

Isn’t it fascinating? I go with my treadmill pace, but I’m liking the looks of my Garmin’s paces.
And I don’t bother with my Garmin when I’m in doors LOL #ProblemSolved 😉 It’s been so fun riding and chatting on Saturday mornings! I love your Tuesday pic of those fast feet on the pedals!! I have to do my workouts first thing as well, though I often times do upper-body work while watching television in the evening. I’ll be curious to hear more about your stair intervals 😉
Kimberly Hatting recently posted…Smiling Through the Snow
Well, that’s one way to solve the discrepancies! LOL
I’ll let you know how the stair intervals go. Maybe I’ll do them tomorrow since I don’t have any cardio on schedule and it will certainly ramp up my strength training workout!
Funny how a really good workout can turn everything around! Sounds like you ended up having a good week. Should we remind you that your cleaning crew will NOT be there this Friday? 🙂 Hope you have another great week coming up!

Isn’t it great how a good workout can reset everything?!
LOL, yes, please remind me!
Oh no about the time/day mixups but glad they all worked out. I remember that the pace on my Garmin and treadmill were always off. However, I would just go with whatever was on the watch. I like to do my run in the morning because after work I like to come home and rest. But there has been a few times when I’ve procrastinated and ended up having a great run.

I bet you are tired after wrangling school children all day long!
I’m someone who really needs to get outside for a bit too and when I can’t it does affect my mood.
I sometimes find it hard to run in Yaktrax unless there’s consistent snow coverage on the roads. I really should look into buying a pair of trail shoes.
Have a great week!
My husband and I have both ruined Yaktrax when wearing them on trails that were only partially snow/ice covered. We didn’t realize they wear down and break so quickly on pavement. Trail shoes are a great alternative under the right conditions!
Great job!
I was super meh this week as well. It’s ok. Better weeks are ahead.
I’ve got a live race this upcoming weekend! Huzzah!
Yeah for a live race! Have fun!
Hey sometimes you just need a few rough days to get up, dust yourself off and get going again, right? Glad you were able to nip that in the bud!
I wish I had shoes I could wear in the snow! I’n now missing outside runs because we got hit with a big storm and all I could find to wear outside were the dr martens I bought in 1992 ha! Bit of weight training with those heavy things as well – took me almost an hour to walk 3km on Monday!
I always take the treadmill and the bike with a grain of salt. I’m never really sure if the distance or speed is correct. My garmin is always behind when I’m on the mill walking and then speeds up when running.
We have a virtual race this weekend. I hope the snow is gone by then…
If all goes well I will see you again Saturday 🙂
Renée @runlaugheatpie recently posted…WRD: Week 5:2021 Groundhog Day Continues
That could be a dual cardio/strength workout running with your Dr. Martens! LOL
I suspect indoor Garmin times have to do with arm swing and that the treadmill time is the most accurate.
Exciting! I hope the snow is gone for you as well so you can get your virtual race completed outside.
I’m hoping to be able to ride with the group on Saturday. I may need to hop on my bike early and then leave the video early. Either way, hope to see you!
Oops on Friday! My Garmin has been spot on since I’ve paired with a foot pod. I still don’t know about using it for indoor track though. I figured it would be pretty close when the GPS is off and the footpod is tracking, but I don’t think so. It’s so tricky to pace indoor track!
Lisa @ TechChick Adventures recently posted…Weekly workouts – GCM training, week 5
Ah yes, I do remember you talking about your foot pod. I don’t have one and normally I don’t run inside on my treadmill often so it’s not a big deal. I’m just fascinated about how indoor tracking works.
