Catching up with a Great Friend
My friend Craig and I go way back. I first met him at Worldgate Sport & Health where I was a trainer and he was a dedicated member. It was our mutual love of Hokie football that initially brought us together and that led to a weekly Friday morning coffee/hot chocolate date. Many years later we’ve both found new gyms and the weekly coffee dates are impossible to continue, but we still try to get together a few times a year to catch up.
Craig is now a snowbird spending the summers in my neck of the woods and his winters south, way south – last year it was Miami, this year it’s Columbia, as in South America. Home for the holidays, Craig stopped by Thursday afternoon to visit for a couple of hours.
And Now on to a RunDown of this Past Week’s Workouts…
Running
Monday morning’s run brought sleet, snow, and rain. Okay, I may be stretching the truth a little bit for effect… Within minutes of waking up at 4:30, I heard sleet hitting the skylights in our bathroom – I’d heard nothing on the skylights in our bedroom before I got up. Thirty minutes later when I got downstairs I could see huge snowflakes floating past the kitchen windows. I checked my weather app and it was 31° with a forecast of a wintery mix.
Once outside, I was greeted by a soft coating of snow covering both the lawn and the street. A couple of test steps helped me determine that the street was not slick and I ventured off on my run. My visor kept the light snow out of my eyes and I enjoyed the peacefulness of our neighborhood turned into a winter wonderland. About three miles into my run the light snow turned over to a light mist and by the beginning of the fifth mile, I started getting pelted by rain. By the time I paused for a selfie in our cul-de-sac, most of the snow had been melted by the rain.
For this snowy run, I’d chosen to wear my new festive full length tights and short sleeved Santa shirt (affiliate link) covered by a light jacket; however, with my lower legs covered I got way too warm. Sometimes, though, you have to go with fashion over function and just sweat it out.
The temperature dropped as the week wore on and it was 28° with a feel like of 22° for Wednesday’s run. This time I wore my HO! HO! HO! / !OH !OH !OH capris and they felt just right.
Friday’s run was downright chilly! It was 18° with a feels like of 14° at 4:45 AM when I headed out the door. I wore a pair of thicker and slightly longer Athleta capris, and for the most part, I was fine, but it definitely took a little longer to warm up.
Biking
I hopped on my spin bike (affiliate link) for twelve easy miles on Tuesday for a rare mid-week ride.
Strength Training
As you can see, my strength training sessions are going extremely well, especially my upper body workouts. 😉 Thanks, Betty, for the perfect card!
Yoga
I fit in two 30-minute routines and a few sun salutations.
It’s on the Blog
In case you skipped checking in on my blog this past week, here’s what you missed…
- Sunday – Mother Nature Keeps Me Guessing with What to Wear
- Tuesday – Last Minute Shopping Ideas for Your Favorite Runner
- Thursday – 2019: My Year in Bling
Coming up this week, tomorrow I’ll be rerunning a favorite post about searching our farm for the perfect Christmas tree when I was a little girl and on Thursday I’ll be joining Marcia for her monthly Runfessions linkup.
In addition to the workouts I mentioned above, here’s a complete rundown of my workouts from this past week (completed either outside or in our home gym)…
- Questions:
- • Where’s the best place to find festive capris and tights? ~ I got my new tights at Kohl’s for $7.99. The problem is that it’s much harder to find holiday capris than full length tights and the tights are just too warm for me when I run.
- • Have you gotten much snow this fall where you live?
- • Did you run in a race this weekend?
And that’s my rundown… Have a great week!

I’m linking up with Deborah at Confessions of a Mother Runner and Kim from Running on the Fly for their Weekly Run Down. Be sure to check out not only the hosts’ posts, but those of the other great bloggers joining in on the fun!
Sounds like we had similar weather on Monday. My car was a sheet of ice on Tuesday – not fun!
Love this time of year because there’s so many options when it comes to holiday outfits! Some of my favorite places to shop for festive gear are Party City, Marshalls and Old Navy, For websites, I love Gone For a Run.
I need to check Old Navy. I got my Santa shirt at Gone for a Run.
Let’s not even talk about the ridiculous amount of snow we got this fall . . . and the cold!
Sounds like you are keeping up with everything really well. Have a great holiday, Deb!
Oh, that bad, huh? And thanks, Judy! You, too!
Our snow has been pretty minimal, though we did get a dusting early in the week and had some a few weeks ago (which was gone with a few days). My big fashion (before function LOL) hack is to wear inexpensive “leggings” (via Walmart) over my real running tights. I just cannot justify dropping coin for something that will only get worn a few times each winter LOL I have three pairs, and a pair of red ones and green ones. I’m set for several years LOL

I totally agree about spending a lot of money on clothes that I won’t wear except for a few times. I was thrilled to find the leggings at Kohl’s for $7.99!
We actually had some nice weather this week. It is also supposed to be nice next week to. I hope I get to run in shorts! Honestly, I mostly wear black tights but I do love seeing everyone else get in the holiday/theme spirit.
Fingers crossed for you – wearing shorts during winter runs is such a treat!
We had a bunch of snow in November and a few dustings since, but nothing remarkable. I’m enjoying our milder weather. I sure hope we don’t get a repeat of last year’s polar vortex!
I’m stunned that you can run in capris when the temperatures are in the 20s! Brrrrr

I can only wear long pants while running when the temps are in the teens or lower; otherwise, I get really overheated. Same with my upper body, I wear short sleeves and an unlined nylon shell unless it gets extremely cold. I’ve always been like that. My Cruiser friends always said they looked at me getting out of my car and added two layers to whatever I was wearing. LOL
It was awfully chilly a few days this week-at least for DC temps. Looks like the week ahead is much warmer. Enjoy it! Thanks for linking up and merry Christmas to you and yours
Thanks, Deborah! Happy Hanukkah!
We had a dusting of snow on Monday but I’m not sure if it got icy in some places. Schools here closed which was shocking! I’m glad there’s no snow in the forecast for this week, especially as so many people will be trying to travel!
Schools were closed in Loudoun County on Monday as well. It seemed silly later in the day when it did nothing more than rain, but when they had to make the call the weather forecast sounded pretty ominous.
Love that you got to spend time with such a good friend! That’s awesome!
I absolutely love your red and green Santa run shirts. I have a really hard time with holiday pants/capris. I feel like they are too thin or slide down, and they just don’t fit me right. Yours are adorable though. I also never wear full leggings or tights because I get too hot. It’s usually shorts for me.
Thank you! I got my shirts at Gone for a Run several years ago.
Wow you’ve had some crazy weather!
How lovely that you got to spend some time with an old friend- and I love that you met each other through fitness!
Yes, it was great to spend a couple of hours with Craig!
And speaking of crazy weather, this week the highs are in the 40’s and 50’s.
I found some really cute (and cheap!!) stuff at Walmart! I am now the proud owner of Christmas tights. I wore them on top of my regular running tights this morning. I am going to be on the lookout for some discounted stuff after Christmas though. My “festive” game is pretty weak when it comes to our holiday runs. Everyone else has cool skirts/socks and such!
Hope you have a great holiday!!!

Yay! I hope you find just what you’re looking for on sale so you can be all decked out for your Christmas runs next year!
