I’m downright giddy with excitement! Just when I thought I was ready to retire from the whole Ragnar van thing, I’ve signed up to run with yet another team!
Keep in mind that there are two types of Ragnar Relays. In one type you sit on your butt in a van anytime you’re not running, and in the other type you stand around in ankle-deep mud anytime you’re not running in shin-deep mud. I kid – sort of…
I’ve run three Ragnar Relays to date, and loved each one for its own unique experience and wide assortment of friends making it fun. I ran my first Ragnar DC with the Cruisers (recap here), my second Ragnar Trail Appalachians with my MRTT friends (recap here), and my last Ragnar DC with my MRTT friends (recap here). Out of six days of Ragnaring, I experienced one delightfully sunny day and five rainy days.
I’m currently signed up to run Ragnar Trail Richmond on an ultra team (twice the running, twice the fun) later this month. I’m holding out hope that the weather gods will be with us and give us near-perfect spring weather! One can dream…
Back to retiring from running another Ragnar Relay that requires sitting in a van… I’ve mentioned on occasion that my body doesn’t like to sit for long periods of time, especially in a car seat. I thought it best if I stopped participating in these races since we really do sit a lot – especially when it’s raining non-stop.
You are safe to assume that it would take something really big to make me giddy about joining another team where I know I’ll have to sit for about 32 hours while we travel 200 miles, taking turns running along the way.
So what makes this Ragnar so enticing? So impossible to turn down? So epic? I’ll give you five reasons…
1. My son Daniel and his girlfriend Jess want to run their first Ragnar DC, and they asked me to be on their team! Reason enough, right there!
2. Our team name is We Thought You Said Rum.
3. My husband Bill is going to be our van driver. He was on my 2014 Ragnar DC team, so he knows the ropes!
4. The running gods have promised me that there is a 50% chance that there will be sunshine!
We have four spots available on our team. Who wants to join us for some rum and run ?
- Questions:
- Have you run a Ragnar or similar relay?
- If you could choose any five other runners to join you, who would be your vanmates? 🙂
- Are you racing this weekend?

Today I’m joining the DC Trifecta’s Friday Five Linkup with Courtney at Eat Pray Run DC, Cynthia at You Signed Up for What?!, and Mar at Mar on the Run! Please stop by these DC area bloggers’ blogs to say hello; and while you’re there, be sure to check out other bloggers who are also participating in the linkup.
SO fun! I enjoyed my Ragnar DC experience last year. I’m not planning any fall adventures yet but I’d love to do another Ragnar sometime or even check out a different locale!! Enjoy, so awesome you’re doing it with your son 🙂
Thanks! I think it would be fun to run in some of the other Ragnar locations, too; but packing for the race and then having to fly somewhere sounds daunting.
Oh this sounds like so much fun. I have always wanted to do a Ragnar race. You say you have four spots left? What are the dates again? And when do you need to know by?

Lacey, the dates are September 16 and 17. If you’re seriously interested, the sooner you let me know, the better. I will continue to actively recruit members to our team, but right now it’s fair to say we still have three, possibly five openings.
Glad you will get to experience another Ragnar with your son and Bill 🙂 I’ve run Ragnar Key West…and would love to do HTC or Ragnar NWP.
I would love to run Ragnar Wasatch Back since Bill and I used to live near there in Utah, but I’m afraid the altitude would get the best of me these days!
I want to do Ragnar someday!!! I’m in Iowa, so it will take some planning to get me to the designated van (in whatever state). Who would I choose for my team? Gosh, I have many awesome blogger gal pals…I’d definitely start with them 😉 (and YES, I am racing this weekend…a small 5K on Saturday (the route goes right by my driveway), and my Fight for Air Climb is Sunday 😉
I think you’d love running a Ragnar, and running with all blogger friends would be so much fun! Meagan (Turkey Runner) and I have been on two Ragnar teams together and will be running Ragnar Richmond Trail together later this month. We originally met through our blogs! 😀
Keep me in mind as a back up. I can never commit until closer, but I’m considering running Ragnar DC again. I love Ragnar!

Good to know, Erika! I just added you to my backup list and will let you know closer to race day if we still are in need of another runner.
That is so exciting that your family will be involved with you in the race. I can’t imagine talking my husband into being the van driver! I’ve never done a relay, but with the right group, I bet they are so much fun.

My husband was on my first Ragnar team and we had so much fun! Since then he’s had knee surgery and hasn’t been able to take up running yet. Being our driver will be his way of still being on our team!
I’ve heard so many great things about the Ragner Relay Races! Love the team name too, you are going to have a Blast!! 🙂

Thanks! I’m so looking forward to it!
I’ve never done Ragnar! It’s the one thing my husband has asked me not to do. Since he rarely says anything about my running, I thought I could honor his request. Plus I’m not great on little sleep…

I turned down my friend’s invitation to join his Ragnar team for about five years before finally deciding to run my first Ragnar (reading recaps on blogs convinced me that I would love it). Since my husband ran on my first team, he gets the attraction. 😀
I have never run a Ragnar but they sound like a blast…and even more awesome that you are getting to run them with family! Keeping my fingers crossed that you get nothing but sunshine!

Please keep those fingers crossed for sunshine! 🙂
I love Ragnar too and how fun to do one with your family! I’d love to do one with mine one day. I have the American Odyssey relay coming up in a few weeks and I am really excited for a new course from Gettysburg.

Gettysburg to DC? If so, sounds beautiful! Have fun!
Omg how fun!! Family affair!!
So tempting too do another Ragnar…buy that is the weekend of my 1st triAthlon.
Enjoy your first tri – so exciting!
ah i would so want to do this but i have a feeling the race will be right before or right after the chicago marathon (october 9). so fun!

Ragnar DC is September 16-17 – three weeks before Chicago. Running the legs so close to each other, and getting so little sleep takes a lot out of you, so I wouldn’t recommend it if you plan to race Chicago. BTW, I ended up not entering the lottery for Chicago. 🙁
LOL ! LOVE the name of the team. Those are GREAT reasons to run.
I have not run a relay but they look like so much fun. Fingers crossed that the weather is nice enough to change the percentage of runs you have done in the rain.

Wow!! that’s awesome! Have a great Ragnar race! I”ve never done a Ragnar, but If I could pick ANYBODY, I would pick my two sisters, my fiancé and my running buddy Jodi.

How exciting!! I would love to run a Ragnar race, I think we have a new one opening up in Florida. Good luck!

Thanks, Mary Beth! I have several friends who have traveled to run Ragnar Key West, and they’ve had so much fun! Another Florida Ragnar location will also probably attract a lot of us from “up north!” 😉
[…] afternoon I set up our Ragnar DC team, We Thought You Said Rum (sneak peak here). I also created a private Facebook group for our team, started filling in the info for our team on […]
I haven’t done a Ragnar yet, although I have actually been asked in an offhand kind of way a couple of times. I know everyone raves about them, but I don’t really see the attraction (and ahem! April showers, as it’s presently doing right outside my window).
That said, have fun!
Judy @ Chocolaterunsjudy recently posted…Would you like me if I weren’t a runner?
Judy, I was exactly like you when I turned my friend down and didn’t join his team for about five consecutive years. Once I ran my first Ragnar, I was hooked. I think it’s one of those things that people either really love, or really hate.
I wish I was in shape to jump in! These feet require a lot of walking right now. I do plan to come by and see you all though 🙂
Very awesome your son asked you 🙂

Can’t wait to meet you; and you’ll get to meet Meagan, too!
Oh boy, Ragnar DC is going to be a fun one for y’all. I love the team name too!! Don’t forget about tagging other people’s van’s. You should definitely get some kind of magnet made that combines running and rum! That’s great that Bill will be along, too, as the van driver. Having someone designated to drive the van makes it so much easier on the team as well.
