In last week’s Weekly Wrap I talked about the need to take some time off from my workouts to recover from melanoma surgery. This week I got fantastic news from my surgeon that my pathology report came back with all clear margins. I can now close that chapter and look forward to many pre-sunrise runs and races lathered in sunscreen.
Not one to shy away from fun, I had gum grafting surgery on Tuesday while still sporting stitches on my face and while in the throws of a terrible head cold. I don’t like to brag, but I now have the gums of a twenty year old – at least on the lower left side of my mouth. Sometime in late February I’ll be able to say the same about the lower right side…
Needless to say, I had another week of taking it easy per the doctor’s orders so my workouts were less than stellar. Timing again was pretty good since we were visiting my mom during the latter part of the week, and visiting my mom at Christmas time means eating lots of homemade goodies (chewing on the right side, of course) and taking afternoon naps on the sofa.
As for my workouts, on Monday I pushed myself somewhat hard in the gym and then went out for an afternoon run. My fresh legs were raring to go, but my sore throat, achy body, and snotty head weren’t as cooperative. I finished six solo miles at around a 9:10 pace so I couldn’t really complain considering how I felt.
Yesterday I got in another weight lifting session and I started off the new year this morning with an easy 10K on the gravel horse trail with the Cruisers. I opted not to register for a neighborhood New Year’s Eve 5K yesterday morning that I’d planned on racing, and instead, slept in and rested my healing body.
Here’s how my second week in a row of being much less active than usual went down…

Glad you got good news at the doctor! I had gum grafting a few years ago, and lucky me, I’m supposed to go for another one. That was before all this RA nonsense started. Now I wait. I think it’s probably not the best time to have any kind of oral surgery.
Happy New Year!

Thanks, Wendy! Happy New Year to you, too! It’s probably best to figure out the RA before making any big changes and it definitely makes sense to hold off on any surgeries that can wait for now…
The Best news ever Debbie. I’m so happy for you.
Thanks, Miles! xoxo
I’m so happy to hear you received good news after your melanoma removal. I’m going to be right behind you with the gum surgery. Honestly, that particular procedure terrifies me so I’m somewhat relieved you didn’t mention it was horrible. LOL. Hopefully your cold will be better soon and you’ll be right back to your normal fitness routine. Thanks for linking, Deb! Happy New Year!
The gum surgery was a walk in the park compared to how I felt with the cold. It was one of those colds where my sore throat lasted for days and then I was achy all over. The worst part was trying to be careful blowing my nose so I wouldn’t cause the wound in the roof of my mouth to bleed (where they took the tissue from for the grafting). Now that I have one surgery behind me, I don’t dread the other because it really wasn’t as bad as I anticipated. Hope that helps!
Glad you got the good news from your doctor!
I love the graphic you created for your weekly workouts!

Thanks, Michelle!
Glad you got such good news. I guess at least you are getting all your surgeries out of the way at once? I hope you heal quickly from all of them.

I suppose you’re right – I did get both surgeries all out of the way quickly. The gum surgery was already scheduled and when the pathology results on my biopsy came back as a melanoma, the skin cancer doctor worked me in within two days. They don’t mess around with melanomas…
Happy New Year, Coco!
Starting off the New Years with great news. Glad to hear! I do not make any resolutions because I get disappointed if I do not reach them.

I don’t make resolutions as much as set goals. This year’s only goal so far is to take the time to meet one of my friends once a month for coffee! 😀 I used to set goals all the time for setting PR’s and then “age adjusted” PR’s, but not any more. This girl just wants to have fun!
That is great news from the doctor!!! My only goal is to find joy in everything. I am tired of all of the negativism in this world.

Seeking joy is a fantastic goal for 2017!
Glad things turned out well for you.
I went out to dinner and a movie with the hubby on NYE.
I ran a fun 3.5 mile race yesterday.
No big goals for 2017 – I don’t set any – just hope to have good health, lots of races and fun times with family and friends.

Your 2017 hopes sound good to me – “good health, lots of races, and fun times with family and friends.” 😀
Fantastic news I say! Great job on your activity this week! Hope your head cold gets better, seems like everyone is dealing with a touch of this and our weather is not helping at all. One day it’s 60 the next 30!
Haven’t decided on goals yet but I think I’m going for a mileage goal, I mean why not ?
Thanks Debbie for joining us each week!

I like mileage goals and think they’re fun, but haven’t set one for the last couple of years because it seems like when I do, I get injured and have to cut back on my mileage for a month or so…
Great news from the doctor! Bummer that you had to miss your New Years race, but it sounds like you made the right call to rest. I usually run a New Years race but didn’t this year. I had a long run planned yesterday but only made it through a couple miles before stopping because of shin – I hated to do it but I have a lot of big goals this year and wasn’t about to derail them all on the first day of the year by stupidly running myself into an injury (did that last year and learned my lesson). I foam rolled, stretched, and iced it and did an easy few miles today that weren’t perfect but were much better!
Sounds like you’re training smart – good for you! It’s so hard to reign it in when we love running so much, but it’s the smart thing to do. All the best meeting those big goals!
ouch that dental surgery does not sound fun at all! Hope you are doing better today. Happy new year!

Surprisingly, the gum surgery wasn’t that bad, but the stupid head cold was miserable. Stitches stay in for three weeks (two more) and I’m getting very good at chewing on my right side. 😉
Wonderful news Deb! I know you are relieved to hear that. I’m impressed you got even a few miles in considering all that your body is dealing with right now! Good luck with the second gum grafting and hope your cold is gone soon!
Happy New Year!

Yay for good news from the doc! Glad you can more forward 😉 A group run on New Years Day for me, and a hefty goal for 2017 will be Fun (and not Finish Times). Happy 2017!!

Fantastic news about the melanoma! 🙂 So great Deb! And, congrats on your new gums 🙂 I’m a dental hygienist and you did a great thing. Looking forward to trying to link up more with your wednesday words!
Thank you, Gina! It was a huge relief to get good news on my final biopsy resport.
It’s good to hear another person in the dental industry approve of my decision to do the gum grafting. I’m sure you’ve very aware that it’s not cheap and my dental insurance only pays so much…
Such great news about your biopsy report, Debbie! And gum grafting… I have a bad feeling that may be in my future at some point.
Here’s to a healthy and happy 2017!
Thanks, Dana! In case you do have to have gum grafting surgery eventually, it wasn’t as bad as I expected… And yes, I agree, here’s to a healthy and happy 2017!
