Carl’s is an institution in Fredericksburg, Virginia; and yesterday Bill and I stopped by for a treat! One of my friends told me about this adorable little old fashioned custard stand years ago when I lived in the area, and I remember that I couldn’t wait to go stand in the notoriously long lines for a frozen treat!
Carl’s was opened in 1947 by Carl Sponseller and still has its old fashioned charm.
Limited flavors make the decision even easier. Chocolate and vanilla for me please!
The employees wear old fashioned uniforms and hats, and couldn’t be any more adorable!
Technically this isn’t frozen custard because it doesn’t have the minimum amount of eggs in it to be called custard, so they call it ice cream. Let’s just say it’s the world best ice cream!
It was so fun to stop back in for a little treat; although, I had mixed feeling about not “getting” to stand in line. We were a little early for the after dinner crowd and were served immediately. There’s something about the anticipation and seeing everyone walk past you with their cone while you wait in line that makes the ice cream taste even better!
- Questions:
- What’s your favorite small town ice cream place?
- Have you ever had authentic frozen custard?
- What flavor would you get, and would you get it in a cone or cup?
i’m thinking about doing a half marathon there in december and now knowing that’s there makes me want to more!!
I think they Carl’s closes between Thanksgiving and President’s Day… Or at least they used to.
YUM! I think I’d go with vanilla in a cone!
When you grow up in rural NJ, and the Dairy Queen IS the closest retail establishment, then DQ becomes your childhood frozen treat of choice. I don’t even look up all the crap that’s probably in their soft serve, because I still love a DQ treat now and then…so nostalgic! Also, nothing SMELLS like Dairy Queen. Sugar, refrigerant, whatever…the area behind that sliding window simply reeks of good summertime memories to me.
Rochester has some pretty infamous custard (Abbott’s), but even though I lived there for 7 years, it never really grew on me the way that DQ did. 🙂
We have a DQ on the Outer Banks and we have that same kind of fondness for it. We try to stop by for a Blizzard treat every time we’re down there, but somehow this summer we didn’t get there on either trip. 🙁
I love frozen custard!!! When we were visiting Cleveland, they had tons of frozen custard places around town. For some reason we only went once!! They also only had like 3 flavors. I always get vanilla in a cup. Never had been a fan of the cone, I always feel its a race against time before it starts melting down to your hand. I don’t like that kinda pressure!!
As I read your comment, I felt like sticky ice cream was melting and running down my arm! 🙂
Looks delicious! You are the only person I know of who was disappointed they didn’t have to stand in line to build anticipation for ice cream, haha 🙂
HaHaHa!!! We were also letting the horrific traffic die down on I95 south…
Carl’s looks wonderful. And it’s not too far away. I have to admit, I ate SO much ice cream about 3 years ago that I really don’t have ice cream all that much. I could change that though.
Road trip to Carl’s!!! 🙂
mmmm that sounds delicious!! There’s a super cute ice cream place just down the street from us that we went to for the first time last night! Back home in Colorado there’s a place downtown called Walrus that we always go to =).
What’s the name of the place near you in DC?
