Monday evening I made the decision to skip my Tuesday morning run with my friends and run/walk with Bill instead. With my running buddy cuddled next to me in our warm bed, we hit snooze several times and missed our run. On Thursday, I’ll be talking about just that – the benefits of having running friends to meet so we aren’t tempted to skip our runs. Pointing out the obvious, there’s nothing ruder than leaving a running friend high and dry at 5:30 AM on a cold winter morning.

Once up, Tuesday morning started off with me accidentally deleting my calendar on my iPhone – I live and breath by that calendar… Most of my client appointments are reoccurring so I wasn’t too concerned about recreating the day-to-day gigs; it was the reschedules here and there that my clients had given me and future random appointments that I knew I would never remember. Google is a wonderful thing, and later in the afternoon I figured out how to restore my calendar on my MacBook, which in turn, thanks to the cloud, restored my iPhone calendar. Whew!

Wednesday morning, Bill and I rolled ourselves out of bed to meet our friend Kim for a run. The plan was for Kim and me to run while Bill did his own run/walk on the adjoining gravel horse trail. Between my disagreeing GI system and Kim’s recovering lungs our run didn’t go quite as planned, but we got it done and both enjoyed our time together knowing that bad runs build character.

Once back home and still dressed in my shorts and tank, I headed out to the path behind our house as soon as the sun came up for a few GoPro strides… 


On Wednesday afternoon I hit up my local Potomac River Running Store to pick up new shoes. After trying on many pairs, I settled on the Nike Air Zoom Pagasus 33 (affiliate link). I don’t plan to immediately replace my Brooks Glycerine’s (affiliate link), but perhaps ease into new running shoes as I give my Nike’s a try for everyday activities and while working. I need a shoe that has room across the top of my foot and doesn’t press against the bump at the base of my right big toe caused by my hallux rigidus. These Pegasus seems to be more forgiving and so far are very comfortable. At some point I’ll give them a whirl on my treadmill and determine if I want to transition into Nikes for running… again. 


As mentioned in the title, being a Nike Pegasus wearer has come full circle for me. I wore my original Pegasus for far too many years – shown here in 1988 – until just before my first marathon in 1997. Oblivious to the importance of wearing good running shoes, I wore those Nikes until they had huge gaping holes between the soles and tops on the medial side of both shoes and the waffle soles were worn flat. 


With a forecast of snow, I opted to stay indoors and run on my treadmill on Thursday morning after hearing the heavy rain bouncing off our bedroom skylights. The temperature plummeted from the 50’s to the low 30’s as dawn approached and I feared the rain would turn to freezing rain before the snow arrived. The final straw was howling wind hitting just as my 4:30 AM alarm jarred me out of bed. Knowing that running wouldn’t be an option for the next few days, I got my behind out of bed and made my way to the basement for a run.

After a busy morning with clients, Thursday afternoon found me back in the periodontist’s office for gum grafting surgery on the opposite side of my mouth. Even though I was told I could resume normal activities the following day, I opted to give my body a break and have taken the rest of the week off from all exercise except my daily five-minute planks. 

Once home, a few snow squalls blew through and we got our second dusting of the winter.
