I was late getting to packet pickup, to the race, to everything… It was like my head wasn’t in the race and when I finally got my bib and started to pin it on my racing tank, I realized that I didn’t even have a shirt with me and I was going to have to race in my sports bra.

I looked around and finally found an old granary next to the starting line where I could duck in and change into what running clothes I had with me. Inside the dusty building I could smell the aroma of grain that instantly took me back our family farm and my childhood. As I lifted one leg to slip on my shorts, a tiny feral kitten jumped up and grasped my bare leg with his sharp little claws. As he slid down my leg, my flesh opened like little razors had sliced through it causing rivulets of blood to drip toward my feet. When I switched and lifted the other leg, another kitten repeated the same mischievous actions as the first.

As I turned toward a sound in the doorway, someone dressed much like a character from the Game of Thrones walked past, ignoring the kittens and me. Just as he was about to exit out the door on the other side of the building, he turned and said, “You’d better hurry. The race is about to start.”

Back outside, I lined up for the race far too close to the starting line for my current racing pace. I looked down at my blood-covered legs and realized that I’d left my shoes in the old farm building, but didn’t have time to retrieve them before the race started. Somehow, I was going to have to race in flip-flops…

Less than a week later, I was toeing the starting line of yet another race while wearing thick fluffy socks suited more appropriately for lounging in front of a warm fireplace. The bulky socks barely fit into my running shoes and made me question why I’d worn them instead of my usual running socks. My thick cotton tee was getting heavier by the minute as a steady rain started to fall. With each raindrop my hair frizzed a little more into a curly mess and I cursed myself for leaving my ponytail holder at home.

As the horn sounded for the race to start, I slapped my wrist to start my Garmin only to realized that it was at home keeping my ponytail holder company. And even though the race had started and we had crossed the starting line, the horn continued to blare…

I rolled over in bed, turned off my alarm, stretched, and scratched my head as I made my way to the bathroom wondering what in the world would cause me to have two such similar, yet odd dreams only five days apart…

On the blog this week, on Tuesday I’ll post a letter to my sixteen-year-old self as part of my contributions to Skin Cancer Awareness Month. To read other articles I’ve written over the last few years, click on my Skin Cancer tab.

In case you missed it, on Monday I talked about my most recent melanoma scare in my blog post, Listening To My Gut Instinct Paid Off… Again, as we kicked off Skin Cancer Awareness Month. On Wednesday I wrote When Imagination Runs Wild as part of my monthly Wednesday Word linkup, and on Saturday I joined Deborah and Coco for their monthly Ultimate Coffee Date where I shared Cinco de Mayo and A Shocking Lack Of FOMO.

And since this is a weekly wrap of my workouts, let me just say that this was an incredibly busy week, both with work and socially. I didn’t hit my cross-training or walking goals and I found less time than usual to practice yoga (the yoga I did was shorter sessions). Here’s how my workouts went down…

Fitness tools beyond the equipment in my gym that I used during the week included:

Cameras used for blog photography include:

  • Questions:
  • Do you have weird dreams about missing a race or having worn the wrong clothes?
  • What do you think my dreams mean?
  • Did you race this weekend?

Have a great week!
