The basement was quiet without any noise,
No banging or clanging of any gym toys.
Just a few empty bottles, and a little spilled water,
I nervously wondered if we had a free-loading squatter.
Forgetting the season, forgetting the time,
I was slightly afraid we were victims of crime.
With weights out of place the last week or so,
One to be curious, I set up my GoPro.
Viewing the video I was relieved to see,
Buddy had returned, much to my glee!
He was skinny and unfit after a year away,
I doubt he could hold on to Santa’s sleigh.
The first exercise he hit was a simple bench press,
His form – oh my – was such a mess!
He moved on to the TRX to give it a try,
But had no idea what to do, so he swung to the sky.
Buddy tried swinging and tossing a kettlebell,
But when he couldn’t lift it, he chose not to dwell.
Without enough strength to perform a lat pull-down,
This happy-go-lucky elf still refused to frown.
After his workout Buddy stretched out his glute,
Hoping not to rip his little elf suit.
Satisfied with his workout, Buddy declared it a wrap,
Then decided it was time for a well-earned nap.
After his shenanigans all alone in the gym,
Buddy decided to do what Santa expected of him.
It was time to spy for Santa noted the little elf,
So he magically flew back to his special shelf.
And there he has been keeping watch over me,
Giving Santa the lowdown over all that he sees.

- Do you have an elf in your house?
- If so, what’s your elf’s name? ~ Obviously ours is Buddy!
- Are you racing this weekend? ~ I’m running in the Run With Santa 5K
This is so cute! My kids are a bit older and the elf wasn’t really a “thing” when they were younger. Good thing for me, probably, since I have zero creativity or energy for things like this.
Thanks! Elf on a Shelf was definitely after my sons grew up. He was too cute to resist, so I got one anyway!
Hah! This is so cute! No elfs in our house. I don’t think Tiger Lilly would like it. 😉

Thanks! HaHa, Buddy is a new addition to our house, and doesn’t have any competition from furry friends.
You’re so talented! I wish I were a “real” writer, the kind that could write poems.
We don’t have an elf (or a mensch on the shelf, either; Maybe we need a doggie on a shelf?).
I am doing a Jingle Bell Run tomorrow.

Thank you; and don’t underestimate yourself!
Good luck at your race tomorrow! Have fun!
Awww….so cute! We don’t have an Elf of the Shelf (it would probably be a dog toy if we did) but he oddly looks EXACTLY like an elf we had around the house when we were little kids. It makes me wonder if that old company revamped that elf and made a fortune!

I keep asking myself why I didn’t invent this little guy! I have a very creepy ceramic elf from when I was little; although, when I look him up on eBay he’s called a pixie…
Well aren’t you clever! Love that Buddy is still getting his exercise in during the holidays.
We took a pass with the whole Elf on the Shelf thing. I just don’t have the desire or time to move him every day and think of cute new things for him to do. There’s enough going on in December, and enough holiday pressure!

Since my sons are grown, I can get by with not having to move Buddy again for the rest of the year! 😉
Omg, so cute!! For some reason Elf stretching cracked me up!
Very creative 😉

I think the stretching part is my favorite, too, and I cracked up when I came up with, “Hoping not to rip his little elf suit.” 😀
So cute love it!

Oh this is so clever! Very cute. I love seeing all the mischievous elves this time of year!
Since my sons were grown before The Elf on the Shelf became all the rage, I felt a little left out so I decided to get an elf anyway and have my own fun. My clients like seeing what he’s gotten into when they come to workout. 🙂
This was awesome! I’m not a fan of the Elf, but I thoroughly enjoyed your poem and your take on his adventures. Thanks for the laugh!

Thanks, Dana! I love making others laugh! 😀
[…] I also spent the work week wondering what was going on in our basement and finally realized that Buddy our elf was back and it was he who was creating the little messes in the basement. You can read a poem I wrote about his adventures here. […]
I have not done the elf on the shelf…but every year I say ‘next year’-lol!!
I ran the Rehoboth half last weekend and finishing the racing season with the MCRRC Jingle Bell Jog on Sunday.
Have fun at your run this weekend. Is it set up more as a fun run by your running group, or is it a race?
I am so far behind on my blog reading, but am catching up while my work vehicle gets worked on at the tire shop. This was so cute!! You did a fabulous job with the poem! 🙂
